Fryeburg Academy is far more than
bricks and mortar. In fact, we are more than a school; we are a community.
Dan Lee, Headmaster
By 1999, it was increasingly evident to the Academy Trustees
that new facilities were the only remaining aspects of campus life that were
holding the Academy back from realizing its full potential as a regional
educational resource. It had become clear during the late 20th century that the
Academy was much more than just a school. It was in many ways the lifeblood of
a vibrant and growing community and region. Then on October 12th of 2005 a
fire destroyed the 50 year old Gibson Gym and shortly thereafter the Phoenix
Project was born. A fitting theme for an eccelerated building project, to not
only replace the old facility, but to build a new facility that would fulfill
the school's long term goals and vision.
This 45,000 square foot facility includes a three court
field house, indoor track, lockers and offices, wrestling room and a well
equipped student and community exercise and fitness center. Harriman
Associates, who also designed the school's library and science center, drew
plans for a facilty that fit the context of the campus and exemplifies the
Academy's mission and values.
